An introduction to astronomy covering planetary, stellar,
galactic and extragalactic subjects. Stellar structure and
evolution, galactic structure and cosmology will be
discussed. This course serves as a gateway to the major.
MAJOR READINGS
One or two texts and several articles.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two hour exams, one final
exam, weekly or biweekly problem sets, and possibly 1 paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This is a
mathematically based introduction to astronomy for potential
majors and others with a good science preparation. Calculus
is used occasionally. Some knowledge of physics (a good
high school course or introductory college course) is
assumed.
