An introduction to the Universe and its major components
(galaxies, stars and planets) is intended for non-science
majors. The course begins with the Copernican revolution
and moves through the modern understanding of the solar
system, and its evolution, to the stars. Stellar structure
and evolution, and galaxies are considered. We end with a
discussion of the big bang theory of the origin of the
universe.

One textbook.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two hour exams, one final,
weekly problem sets, two-three lab exercises.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This is a general
education course for students not intending to major in a
physical science or mathematics. Such students should
enroll in ASTR155 instead. The labs, meeting at night,
will give the students an opportunity to view some of the
objects discussed in class through telescopes at the Van
Vleck Observatory.
