This course focuses on the investigation of architectural
space and form through projects with specific building
program and site context. Emphasis is placed on the
exploration of conceptual, social and theoretical issues in
design. Integral to this course is the development of the
students' skills of architectural representation techniques
(drawings and models).
MAJOR READINGS
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Assignments include weekly
in-class analysis problems and a series of longer (two to
three week) architectural analysis and design projects.
Students will continue to keep an unruled sketchbook as a
diary of sketches and developing architectural thought. Out
of class assignments, however, will be done as separate
exercises and documented for a portfolio which will be kept
and updated through the course of the semester. Final
project (five weeks) will be the design of a building in an
urban context. A sequence of theoretical texts on
architecture will be introduced in order to familiarize
students with the complexity of issues which have driven the
historical architectural debate.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Course fee: $60.
Students are expected to attend all class sessions.
Although there are no formal prerequisites, the course
serves primarily as a continuation of Architecture I.
Students are expected to attend all lectures and design
labs.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
