This seminar emphasizes participation in the various steps of organizing an exhibition on current issues in contemporary art (to be installed in the Zilkha Gallery during the following fall). Students will be given the opportunity to come into personal contact with contemporary artists and to familiarize themselves with the philosophical, aesthetic, and social issues that inform their work and the exhibition. The seminar includes supervised field trips to New York galleries, museums, and artists' studios and requires students to demonstrate ability to do independent research and writing on specific issues and selected artists.

MAJOR READINGS

Readings pertinent to the artists and the
exhibition will include monographs, journal articles,
essays, and contemporary reviews.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Assignments related to exhibition and catalogue production will include researching and writing introductory wall texts, extended object labels, bibliographies, and biographies. Evaluation will be based on demonstration of close and thoughtful reading of assigned texts through participation in class as well as the quality and completion of research and writing assignments.

Permission of Instructor required. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
