Art and Culture in Premodern Korea

An historical survey of the major artistic traditions of
Korean art and of the cultural context that shaped them.
Beginning with the prehistoric period and continuing to the
19th century, the course will consider the arts of
Korea--especially Buddhist sculpture, ceramics and
painting--in terms of both peninsular history and, where
relevant, historical and cultural developments in China and
Japan.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two hour examinations,
chronology and pronunciation quizzes, occasional brief
written exercises (2-3 pages), one or two less brief written
exercises (5-7 pages).
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Students will find
it helpful, but not essential, to have some background in
East Asian--especially Chinese--history, thought and/or
art history.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
