This course will survey the history of women's involvement in the visual arts in the United States by examining the careers of specific women who have worked as artists (amateur and professional), critics, commentators, collectors or patrons (or combinations thereof) from the colonial period to the early 20th century. Topics to be addressed will include patterns of training, employment opportunities and patronage, association with professional artists' groups and exhibiting organizations, and the authority of the feminine viewpoint in cultural and aesthetic issues in America.

Three short papers; research paper.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
