This course is a survey of the painting and sculpture of
black American artists. Beginning with Duncanson,
Bannister, and Tanner, the course then focuses on the art of
the Harlem Renaissance and the intellectual ideal of the
"New Negro." The role of the WPA and the art of Jacob
Lawrence is followed by a section on the impact of the civil
rights movement on the visual arts, and the art of Bearden.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
A midterm and a final; a class
debate and an 8-10 page paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
A field trip to New
York museums is part of the scheduled curriculum. $25
travel expenses (bus) paid by students. This course may be
taken independently of ARHA266.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the
first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
