This historical survey begins with an introducation to the arts of Africa. It continues with a focus on Caribbean festival arts. These festivals include Trinidadian Carnival and the Jonkonnu Festivals of Jamaica and of coastal North Carolina. We also study Brooklyn Caribbean Day, using videotapes. The course will then turn to slave culture in the United States. This section considers recent archeological evidence of the persistence of African material culture in slave society. This course may be taken independently of AFAM268.

Two hour exams and a final plus an 8-10 page term paper.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

A field trip to New York museums is part of the scheduled curriculum. ($25.00 fee). Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
