While exploring the unique nature of Dutch painting this course will probe ties to other European traditions, especially in Flanders and Italy. Attention will be given to issues of art theory as well as to current controversies over interpretation.

documents and other primary literature (in English
translation) as well as scholarly articles. Although the
course has no textbook, the following volumes are

REPUBLIC, 1585-1718.
