ARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDIES

ARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDIES

Professor: Clark Maines (Art History)

Associate Professors: Carla M. Antonaccio (Classical Studies), Douglas K. Charles (Anthropology)

Assistant Professors: Christopher C. Parslow (Classical Studies)

Wesleyan offers a range of courses in archaeology and related areas and excellent opportunities for excavation experience. Archaeology at Wesleyan can be studied in a variety of departments, and majors can be pursued in anthropology, classical studies, or as a university major.

Students interested in an archaeology major should take Introduction to Archaeology (ANTH 204/CCIV 204), two intermediate courses in archaeological areas (such as Medieval Archaeology or Prehistory of North America), and the advanced seminar in archaeological theory (ANTH 381/CCIV 381). Some work in the areas of geology, history, anthropology, art history, statistics, and computer applications is also strongly recommended. Fieldwork experience will be expected for any student completing an archaeology major.

Students may attend the University of Sheffield, England, in the second semester of their junior year. Areas of specialty at Sheffield include economic and environmental reconstruction with a focus on later European prehistory and Romano-British and Early Medieval Archaeology.

Wesleyan also offers faculty-directed summer fieldwork opportunities for undergraduate students at Morgantina, Sicily (Greek); Soissons, France (Medieval); and Illinois (Native American). Fieldwork opportunities are also available through Sheffield.
