Structural Approaches to Language, Culture and Literature

This course will explore the foundations and development of the structuralist movement and assess its unity by examining the use of structuralist approaches in linguistics, anthropology and literary theory. The emphasis will be on anthropological structuralisms. Key issues include: the powers and limits of the structuralist concept of "system" analytical models and their relationship to social consciousness, the status of the "antinomy" between structures and events.
