Ethnicity, Nationality, Identity

The course examines the concepts of ethnicity, nationality,
and identity as their meanings change in a variety of
contexts. In ethnographies and films of complex,
multi-ethnic societies, characterized by pluralism,
migration, transnationalism, and diasporas, we will explore
how culture - language, religion, kinship, gender, history,
and ideology - transforms in interaction with
political-economy and modernity.

Three short reaction papers;
one longer paper (6-10 pages); midterm exam and final exam.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first
class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE:
Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
