The course examines the concepts of ethnicity, nationality, and identity as their meanings change in a variety of contexts. In ethnographies and films of complex, multi-ethnic societies, characterized by pluralism, migration, transnationalism, and diasporas, we will explore how culture - language, religion, kinship, gender, history, and ideology - transforms in interaction with political-economy and modernity.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Three short reaction papers; one longer paper (6-10 pages); midterm exam and final exam.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
