Anthropology of Time/Space

We shall study time/space as a category and value in order
to understand problems of transition, change and
transformation in societies. How are time and space
understood, experienced and categorized in different
societies? Is there a difference between "tradition" and
"modernity", East and West? What happens in the course
of industrialization and development? We shall study
medieval Europe, and precolonial India, Sudan, and
contemporary societies in Asia and Africa, as well as
advanced industrial societies in Europe and North America.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Students will be responsible
for one project to consist of a short paper, a brief oral
presentation and a longer essay. The project should be
comparative: two or more case studies of time in different
societies.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Anthropology or
social science course at the 200 or higher level.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class
meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to
the first class, they will be dropped from the class list.
NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form
to the Registrar's Office.
