Language in Society and Culture

Language and speech will be examined in society and culture,
with particular attention to semiotics; ethnoscience; the
ethnography of speaking; pragmatics; discourse and
conversation analysis; deconstruction theory; performance
and the feminist critique of linguistics. Throughout the
course the connection between language and social relations
of power will be analyzed in cross-cultural perspective.
