The Interpretation of Ritual

This course will examine anthropological approaches to ritual in the context of a study of ritual performance in primitive and modern societies. Among the issues to be considered are the nature of communication in ritual, relationships between ritual and mythology, ritual action and social structures, the role played by ritual in organizing and expressing emotions and the political uses of ritual.
