Hinduism and Islam: State and Society

A study of the relation between religion, politics and economics in South Asia today. A historical perspective on Indian civilization will establish the theme of diversity and conflict (social, communal, regional) in the light of cultural unity. Among the issues considered are the structure and transformation of caste, class, kin/marriage and gender relations, linguistic and religious division, secularism, ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka and Punjab, Islam and the state in Bangladesh and Pakistan. Course materials will include novels and films, in addition to anthropological monographs.
