People used to living in arctic conditions in Siberia crossed the Bering Strait and found two uninhabited continents of temperate and tropical environments. Their history is that of learning how to live in those new habitats-the last great experiment in human adaptation. This broad subject matter will be circumscribed by the themes of adaptation (cultural ecology) and the development of social hierarchy and by a focus increasingly on the eastern woodlands, culminating in an examination of Native American-European contact in New England.
