This course is designed to introduce students to cultural anthropology. Emphasis is placed on understanding humans in the context of both social interaction and cultural systems of meaning. Sections will have variable content. Anthropology and the Study of Contemporary World Problems; This section will focus on how anthropology illuminates certain events and situations most of us think of as problems in the world today. Aging in industrial societies, organized violence and black-white relations in the United States will be examined through the anthropological lens.

Seven papers and two group presentations.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students will not be admitted to the course after the first class meeting. Anthropology 102 may be taken only once for credit.
