This course examines the role of English-speaking Caribbeans in American national culture. We look at Caribbeans' images of themselves in literature and popular culture to understand how they have interrogated and redefined what it means to be "American" and "African American" in the twentieth century, and in the context of United States imperialism.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

One mid-term paper, 5-8 pages. One final paper, 12-15 pages. In-class written responses and one oral persentation. There will be no final examinations.

Preference to American Studies Majors. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
