A collectively-organized and student-taught course. It
confronts the traditional character of teacher-student
relations by rotating teaching responsibilities. With the
guidance of two student facilitators, groups of eight to
twelve students will plan and read the course's agenda; they
will educate themselves. Topics for discussion are selected
by consensus at the first class meeting; they have in the
past included sexuality, heterosexuality, gender, family,
community, and liberalism. This course seeks to integrate
the personal with the political, and seeks enthusiastic,
intellectually curious and self-motivated students.
MAJOR READINGS
Chosen after class begins.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Weekly response papers, a
community service project and final research project.
Attendance and handing in all written work are mandatory,
and failure to comply will result in being dropped from the
course. Class participation is essential; students are
responsible for facilitating at least one discussion during
the semester, and each student must be committed to reading
100-plus pages a week for the course.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
There is no
preregistration. Course admission is through an application
and interviews with the teaching apprentices during the
Drop/Add period only. Once students have been admitted to
the course, sections are then arranged in an effort to
ensure a balance in terms of class year, gender, race,
political background, and academic experience. There will be
a course fee of $15.00.
