Study of selected works of architecture, fiction, film,
music, drama, painting, photography, poetry, sculpture of
the American people; popular and high art: three
representative artists for each; survey, not history. What
makes a piece American? How have American attitudes toward
arts and artists affected their development? Lectures;
midterm, library exercise and final.
MAJOR READINGS
UNCLE TOM'S CABIN (play), O'Neill, Williams,
Faulkner, Twain, Barthelme, Dickinson, Whitman, Joplin,
Ives, Jazz; films of Keaton, Ford, Eastwood.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Midterm hour test, library
exercise, listening assignments; final examination
(take-home).
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Movie showings
4:30-6:30 p.m., Mondays in the Cinema: special arrangements
made for athletic conflicts. Course fee $35. Preregistered
students must attend first class meeting or be subject to
withdrawal from the course.
