1949, The year of the founding of the PRC, was to lead to profound changes in Chinese literature. The requirement that literature serve politics reinforced a preexisting tendency, and with the inception of thought reform and, eventually, The Cultural Revolution, literary independence was all but suffocated. The 1980's have seen the resurgence of an independent role for literature, though the events of June, 1989, throw its future into question once again. These vicissitudes contrast with a steadier evolution in Taiwan's literature since 1949, which will serve as points of reference and contrast for materials from the Chinese mainland.
