Premodern Chinese Literature

Poetry, prose, fiction, and drama of premodern China are
central to this course, which provides a survey of Chinese
literature from ancient times to 1911. In analyzing the
selected works, we will trace the development of the major
literary genres, with consideration of social and historical
situations in which the masterpieces were produced. No
knowledge of Chinese is required.

Cyril Birch, ANTHOLOGY OF CHINESE LITERATURE
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
One midterm examination, one
take-home final, three five-page essays. Each student will
also do presentations in class.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
No knowledge of
Chinese is required, but some background in literature or
in East Asian Studies is desirable.
