This course surveys the ways twentieth century
anthropologists and African-American intellectuals have
analyzed African-American communities and cultures in the
U.S. We will examine the development of anthropological
discussions about race and culture, the black family,
African-American identity, and the African diaspora and
explore how they have intersected with political and
intellectual movements.
