This course examines the work of four major African
American writers. Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston
were major figures in the Harlem Renaissance and beyond.
Morrison and Wideman continue to produce major fiction in
the modern era. We will examine the writers and their work,
paying particular attention to issues of gender, family,
community, sexuality and the literary politics effecting
African American writers.

There will be four five-page
papers.
