The purpose of this course is to familiarize you with the basic contours of the Black experience in the United States and to expose you to a series of African American texts of various forms of writing, including history, autobiography, political and educational theory, sociological analysis, and literature. Our primary concern in the course will be to examine various African American responses to and representations of the political and social conditions of America from the middle to the nineteenth century to the present.
