Academic Year 2005/2006
Feminist Theory
WMST 209 FA
What is theory? For that matter, what is feminism? How does theory matter to feminism? To address these questions we will read a wide range of theorists who consider subjectivity, identity, power, gender, sexual
difference,
transnational feminism, and social movement. Throughout the semester we will analyze a contradiction at the heart of feminist theories and practices: gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and class are interdependent (each
depends on the others for its meaning) and autonomous (each stands alone).

Patricia Williams, THE ALCHEMY OF RACE AND RIGHTS
Judith Butler, EXCITABLE SPEECH: A POLITICS OF THE PERFORMATIVE
David Eng, RACIAL CASTRATION: MANAGING MASCULINITY IN ASIAN AMERICA
