Irish Theater and Politics
THEA 303 SP

The tumultuous relations between Ireland and Great Britain are reflected in their plays and politics of the last three centuries, most significantly at the time of the Irish Rebellion of 1798, and then later in the 20th century with the establishment of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin and the forming of the Irish Republic. The emigrations to America of Irish Catholics and Protestant Dissenters over the past three centuries have included many writers, actors and other artists who have influenced the theater and politics of the United States as well. This course will track these developments.
