Seeing Performance Art: From Futurism to the Present
THEA 237 SP

This is a hands-on class where students will explore Performance Art history, aesthetics and its collision with theater from a project-based studio course; Students will conduct performance assignments and conceptual research between art forms in a guided studio setting.

Class Reader to be purchased at Minute Man (main street)

Recommended:
Michael Huxley and Noel Witts, "The twentieth-Century Performance Reader" Second Edition.
Anthony Howell, "The Analysis of Performance Art".

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Each class will consist of a hands-on class and/or guided discussion of art theory, art/theater history and art criticism.
In this course, you will be asked to complete class assignments and written responses from the Class Reader articles. There will be a midterm assignment and a Final performance.

Written responses (class reader) 20%
Mid term Performance 20%
Final Performance 30%
Materials for the project will be provided by the students, therefore, think wisely and be creative with your resources.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Demonstrated capability of a finished creative work (installation, collage, poem, music, painting, etc.)

Our main objectives in this course are:
-To obtain practical experience in conveying your ideas through performance.
-To learn the history of performance art and its crossover with theater.
-To understand the aesthetical development of performance.
-To articulate your personal aesthetics, tastes, and passions.
-To obtain basic skills on peer criticism and aesthetics.
