History of Fashion and Manners
THEA 190 SP

The course is intended to give the students a wide picture of the history of fashion-as a social component of human society-by understanding the aesthetic standards set by different cultures throughout history. The analysis will often be extended to architecture and visual arts and will unveil how artists of the past used to think and create in accordance with the aesthetic models of their time. The course will give the students the opportunity to explore the limits of their creativity and imaginative thinking by carrying out small design projects which will reflect the theoretical knowledge gained in class.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

There will be two written tests due during the course of the semester. A portfolio of design work-to include drawings, sketches, etc.-of all assigned work is needed and will be graded on. A project for the final exam will be required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

For students willing to expand their liberal arts horizon this course will reveal a new chapter in the historic development of mankind. It will also stimulate their creative skills and enrich their thinking with the addition of an "artistic attitude".
