Families on Stage: Individual, Society and the Nation in Spanish Theater from 1600 to the present
SPAN 243 SP

Theater showcases conflict, and conflict tends to be experienced most acutely within the intimate confines of the family. This is why the family along with its spatial correlate, the home, have been treated as the privileged scenario for dramatic literature since the days of Oedipus and Hamlet. The parallel between the stage and the family and the allegorical implications that derive therein are a key incentive for much of the writing for the stage in Spain, from the Golden Age (1600s) to the present. In this course we will evaluate these implications at different stages of Spanish history to see how the portrayal on stage of family conflict evolves over time and is adapted to highlight social trends and questions of nationhood and collective identity within a fluid national domain.

MAJOR READINGS

A selection of plays from the Golden Age (Lope de Vega, FUENTEOVEJUNA; Calderón de la Barca, LA VIDA ES SUEÑO; Tirso de Molina, EL BURLADOR DE SEVILLA O EL CONVIDADO DE PIEDRA), the 18th and 19th centuries (Vicente de la Huerta, RAQUEL; José Zorrilla, DON JUAN TENORIO), and the 20th century (Antonio Buero Vallejo, EL TRAGALUZ; Fernando Fernán Gómez, LAS BICICLETAS SON PARA EL VERANO; José Luis Alonso de Santos, BAJARSE AL MORO)

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Written: three short papers, a mid-term and a final exam. All readings, discussions and assignments are conducted exclusively in Spanish. From time to time, students will be expected to listen to tapes and see videos in the Language Resource Center.

SPAN243 is intended primarily for students who have just completed SPAN221. Students who have not done so and those who have already taken an advanced course should consult with the professor before preregistering.
