Seminar in Sociology
SOC 324 SP
This seminar offers seniors in the major an occasion to draw together their studies in sociology. After a review of basic ideas, traditions, and problems in the field, attention will be given to the use of the
sociological
imagination in sociological thinking and research. Students will write their senior research essays in this course.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Reading, attendance, short papers, group work, a final 20-30 page research paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
The course is open only to senior majors in sociology.
Please note that 324 is a course offered to support students in their senior year finishing their required research essay. It is a course in the major and is
therefore graded on work done in
the seminar (including reading, timely presentation of sections of the essay work, oral presentations, and a major final presentation of the project, as well as the paper itself).
Admission is by Permission of
Instructor and limited to a workable
size with students willing to work in groups, which includes taking each other's work seriously. Admission to the course will be determined by submissions to the instructor of either of the following: 1) a previously
written course paper or early draft of
the essay you will be developing in this course; or: 2) a 1500 word research proposal, including a tentative research question, suggested method, preliminary review of the literature, and a brief statement of why you are
passionate about this subject.
These application materials may be submitted at any time after the beginning of pre-term registration. The final due date is the last day of classes in the fall semester. Those admitted will be contacted either for an
interview or for notification of
acceptance. Students off campus in the fall are urged to apply at the due date, though they will be given special consideration for inclusion if they cannot. Students unable to present the application materials in the
fall may have until the first day of
class in the spring semester (on the risk of the class being filled).
In my experience this way of working can be enjoyable and helpful, but there is not shame in being unable or unwilling in this kind of class.
They are encouraged to make arrange
ments private tutorials with an advisor of their choice. Charles Lemert would be glad to discuss any of the above with applications or doubters.
