An Introduction to Quantitative Analysis

The course is an introduction to the concepts, methods and tools used in the analysis of quantitative data in the social sciences. It covers topics in descriptive statistics and statistical inference, and adopts a "hands-on, learning-by-doing" approach to explore major sources of social data and to develop the appropriate statistical tools.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two tests, a final exam, and regular practice assignments.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

The course is a "user friendly" introduction to data analysis and statistical analysis software. The use of SPSS is integrated to course activities and will be used for exploring and analyzing real world data (e.g. American National Election Study, General Social Survey, US Census data, Sociometrics Social Science Electronic Data Library, Polling Data available through the Roper Center, National Center for Education Statistics etc).
