Sociology and Social Theory

Through close reading, discussion and active interpretation, the course will critically examine the basic writings of classical and contemporary social theorists who have influenced the practice of sociology.

MAJOR READINGS

Selected readings from Karl Marx, Max Weber, Sigmund Freud, Simone de Beauvoir, Immanuel Wallerstein, Albert Memmi, Robert Blauner, W.E.B. DuBois, Nancy Fraser, Iris Young, Frank Parkin, John Roemer, and William Julius Wilson, among other contemporary theorists

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Three eight-page take-home essays.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students must have had SOC 151 or SOC 152 to enroll in this course. This course is open to majors only.
