We will read Gogol's best known stories in the context of this German sources and Russian contemporaries.

MAJOR READINGS

MERTVYE DUSHI; assorted critical works in Russian and English.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Regular class presentations; several short papers in Russian.
