The Poor Clerk: Origins of the Petersburg Tale

We will follow the evolution of realism in the first half of the nineteenth century from E.T.A. Hoffmann's effect on Pushkin's and Gogol's Petersburg stories to Dostoevsky's first tales of the poor clerk. Through close reading, we will see how Russian authors of the Naturalist school reworked the devices of German literature to create their own tradition. Taught in Russian, the course is designed for both advanced students of Russian and native speakers.
