(Non-) Violence in the Religions of India

This class explores the dialectical relationship between violence and non-violence in the religions of India (Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Islam). We will trace the history of (non-) violence from its context of ritual sacrifice, through representations of warfare and royal power, to the work of Gandhi and contemporary communal conflicts.
