General Physics I
PHYS 113 FA

This course is the first term of a general physics course with calculus. The focus is on Newtonian dynamics and its ramifications for mechanics and heat. An objective of this course is to go beyond a conceptual understanding of the material and to develop the ability to achieve precise, quantitative solutions to examples illustrating the physics being studied.

MAJOR READINGS

P.A. Tippler, PHYSICS, vol. 1, or equivalent.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two hour exams, a final exam. Weekly problem sets and biweekly quizzes.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

A semester of calculus (in secondary school or college) is a prerequisite. Problem solving help sessions, run by undergraduate TAs, are provided weekly. The associated laboratory course, PHYS121, is optional but can provide first hand experience with most of the concepts. An honors section of the laboratory, PHYS125, is available for motivated students who want to delve deeper into the harsh realities of the world. Students planning to enter the health professions should be aware that a year of phys ics with laboratory is usually required for admission. Consult your major adviser if you are in doubt about similar requirements in your field.
