Readings in Classical Chinese Philosophy
PHIL 265 FA

Crosslistings:
EAST 282

The goal of this class is to give students access to important Chinese philosophical texts in their original Classical Chinese in order to facilitate a level of engagement with the texts and their ideas that is impossible without reading them in their original language. The use of innovative pedagogical techniques, including the computer program Wenlin, will enable students with no prior background to move quickly to a point where they can understand the texts in question. Roughly half of each week will be spent on language-learning and half on discussion of the content of the passages we study.

MAJOR READINGS

Readings will be of three types: Grammar and vocabulary information and exercises, passages in Classical Chinese drawn from important philosophical texts, and contemporary English-language secondary scholarship on the philosophical ideas and terms contained in those passages.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Regular quizzes, a midterm, and a final exam, plus two five-page papers (in English, but requiring the use and discussion of materials in Chinese).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

No background in Chinese (Modern or Classical) is required. Students with some background in Modern Chinese are also welcome; expectations for them on language quizzes/tests will be somewhat different than for those with no background. Students with previous study of Classical Chinese are less suitable for this course, and should consult the instructor if they are interested.

Previous or concurrent enrollment in PHIL205 (Classical Chinese Philosophy) is required. Students who plan on taking t he two courses concurrently should consult the instructor about the possibility of obtaining a prerequisite over-ride.
