Tonal Harmony
MUSC 104 SP

Music 104 is a study of tonal harmony, building on the foundation established in Music 103. The resources for compositions and analysis in 104 expand to include non-chord tones, seventh chords, modulations to closely related keys, and secondary functions (temporary shifts to closely related keys). These topics are explored in classical repertoires circa 1700-1900, jazz, popular music, and folk music. Students continue to develop musical skills (sight singing, keyboard skills, and ear-training) in tandem with theoretical knowledge.

Music 104 also extends beyond traditional notions of tonal harmony by introducing modes; pentatonic, whole-tone, and octatonic or "diminished" scales; and the blues scale and changes.

The course is required of all music majors. Students considering a major are encouraged to take it in their first or second year.

There will be weekly homework assignments, quizzes, a midterm and final examination.

Students will be required to attend weekly ear-training sessions on Fridays.
