Academic Year 2005/2006
Materials and Design
MUSC 103 FA
Musc103 introduces students to musical material and design, using Western notation. Written exercises, sight singing, and dictation encourage students to develop theoretical understanding in tandem with aural perception
and performance skills. Introductory exercises in musical composition offer further opportunities to explore musical materials. The course begins with fundamentals: scale types, keys, intervals, and the notation of
rhythm
and meter. It then moves on to chord construction, melodic writing, harmonic syntax, and the principles of part writing for four voices. The course draws on a range of genres and traditions including Western classical
music,
folk, rock, jazz, and world musics. No background is necessary for the course, but students who have not previously worked with Western notation will need to devote extra time at the outset and throughout the course.
