One of the main goals of this course is to introduce the audience to the concept of numbers and to the many roles they play both in the real world and within the realm of mathematics. By investigating problems stemming from our daily lives (e.g. How the information on the Internet is protected? How likely are you to draw an inside straight in poker?) we are going to explore various topics such as counting, numerical patterns in nature, prime numbers, coding theory and cryptography, and systems of numbers that lie outside the usual "real numbers."
