Make it Short: The Italian Novella
ITAL 222 SP

This course will trace the development of the novella, or short story, from its origins in the 13th century through the early modern period. Although the emphasis will be on recurrent themes (love, marriage, sexual and political intrigue), and characters (especially women, priests, and princes), some attention will be given to stylistic development and to the social and historical contexts that affected individual writers.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Weekly short reports. One midterm exam, one final paper and one oral exam Italian style. All class discussion, readings and written work in Italian.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

ITAL222 is intended for those who have completed 221 or at least on semester at Wesleyan's program in Bologna. Students not meeting these criteria who believe themselves qualified must seek the permission of the instructor.
