Patterns of the Chinese Past: Culture, Politics, Ecology

This course will combine seminar discussion and some lectures to familiarize students with major debates about the development of traditional Chinese culture in imperial times. We will explore new scholarly works that challenge previous interpretative frameworks for Chinese culture, especialy the idea of the dyanstic cycle.
