Saints and Sinners in Europe, 1215-1590

This research seminar will help students to research the dominant role of religious ideas and institutions in forming the self and society of Europeans in the later Middle Ages and 16th century. Much of the focus will be on the relationship between individual Christians and surrounding community and church. This will entail an examination of saints, mystics and philosophers on the one hand and those declared heretics or witches on the other. The relationship of state power to religious organization and religious change will also be discussed in a comparative perspective, considering England, Spain, Scotland, Germany and France.

Tentative: Eamon Duffy, THE STRIPPING OF THE ALTARS John Bossy, CHRISTIANITY AND SOCIAL CHANGE Andre Vauchez, THE LAITY IN THE MIDDLE AGES Richard Southern, WESTERN SOCIETY AND THE CHURCH IN THE MIDDLE AGES Major writings by Anselm, Aquinas, Marsilius of Padua, Wyclif, Erasmus, Luther and Calvin will also be read in conjunction with a primary source archive provided either on-line or in a photo-copy packet.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

One 20-25 page research paper and drafts thereof. Three class facilitations. One significant class presentation. Participation and attendance.
