Mystical Traditions in Islam

Muslim scholars in the 20th century often condemn the mystical traditions, Sufism, as being un-Islamic. But for almost a thousand years mysticism provided an alternative voice to Muslim believers. This course will explore the origins and development of Sufism and its extraordinary impact on the cultural life of Muslims in art, music, poetry, and philosophy.
