20th Century Intellectual History
HIST 259 SP
This is a course in the reading and analysis of literary and philosophical texts central to the understanding of twentieth century intellectual and cultural experience. We will focus on several key thinkers and their
relationship
to the milieu in which they lived as well as the migration of their ideas across national borders. We will also explore the ramifications of those ideas over time and space (for example, the relation between
intellectual
production and European de-colonization). The goal of this course is thus to explore the cultural production of specific individuals and to demonstrate how the ideas produced by those individuals in science, literature,
religion,
art, philosophy, political theory, drama, or poetry interact with social realities over time.

Authors to be read may include (but will not be limited to): Adorno, Bergson, Benjamin, Cixous, de Beauvoir, Derrida, Foucault, Habermas, Husserl, Heidegger, Irigary, Kafka, Kundera, Kristeva, Marcuse, Merleau-Ponty,
Rorty, Sartre,
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
1. Class Participation and Attendance: 15%
Students must attend regularly to complete the mid-term and final paper. Lectures and class discussions will treat a variety of subjects absent from course
readings.
2. Midterm Examination: 25% X 2 =
50%
There will be two take-home midterm examinations. In this exam, students will be asked to write an analytical essay on one of several broad thematic topics pertaining to the course material. Students may also be
asked to provide short
descriptions of important persons, events or concepts.
3. Final Paper: 35%
There will be one short research paper (7-10) pages in length) due on Friday, April 18 by noon. See "Paper Topics" handout.
