Islamic Civilization: The Classical Age
HIST 231 FA
This course surveys the historical development of Islamic civilization from the time of the Prophet Muhammad to the rise of the Ottoman state. Special emphasis will be placed on the unique cultural forms this
civilization
developed and the emergence of Islam as a world religion. This course primarily deals with the history of Muslim peoples and only secondarily with Islam as a system of religious belief.

THE KORAN
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two assigned papers 5-7 pages in length, four in-class quizzes, final registrar scheduled exam.

Attendance and class participation will be factored into final grade.
