Rome Through the Ages
HIST 208 SP
This course surveys the history of Europe's most resonant urban symbol, the city of Rome, from antiquity to the Baroque era (1600s). It focuses both on Rome's own urban, political and cultural history and on the city's
changing content as a symbol over 2000 years. This is a lecture and discussion course that emphasizes reading and viewing primary sources, both literary texts and visual images.
MAJOR READINGS
Livy, Cicero, Virgil, St. Augustine, medieval pilgrim guides, THE LIFE OF COLA DI RIENZO, Petrarch, Vasari, and Shakespeare among others. Also John Stambaugh's THE ANCIENT ROMAN CITY.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two 3-4 page papers on assigned readings. One short research project to prepare for final in-class essay. Brief written exercises to prepare for weekly discussions.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
No late papers. Active participation in discussion required.
