Beginning with a Parisian riot widely understood to be a fascist insurrection in 1934, followed immediately by massive popular protests from the Left, France entered a decade in which it was at war with itself, often characterized as a Franco-French civil war. These were years of uncommon political engagement, disappointments, struggle, and multiple disasters. A divided France encountered the menace of another European war, concluding with its astonishing defeat in 1940 by Nazi Germany. This seminar explores the ideological antagonisms which shaped French life during the Popular Front, a broad alliance of the Left, 1934-1938, and during the German occupation, 1940-1944, when French authorities collaborated with the occupier. We will consider interpretation and memory of these dark years, and draw upon documents, films, memoirs, and journalistic accounts.
